ESINVM 3 D : A 3 D resistivity inversion package

چکیده
We have developed an open source 3D, MATLAB based, resistivity inversion package. The forward solution to the governing partial differential equation is efficiently computed using a second-order finite volume discretization coupled with a preconditioned, biconjugate, stabilized gradient algorithm. Using the analytical solution to a potential field in a homogeneous half space, we evaluate the accuracy of our numerical forward solution and, subsequently, develop a source correction factor that reduces forward modeling errors associated with boundary effects and source electrode singularities. For the inversion algorithm we have implemented an inexact Gauss-Newton solver, with the model update being calculated using a preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithm. The inversion uses a combination of zero and first order Tikhonov regularization. Two synthetic examples demonstrate the usefulness of this code. The first example considers a surface resistivity survey with 3813 measurements. The discretized model space contains 19,040 cells. For this example, the inversion package converges in approximately 25 minutes on a 2.8 Ghz Pentium 4, with 4 Gb of RAM. The second example considers the case of borehole based data acquisition. For this example there were 4704 measurements and 13,200 model cells. The inversion for this example requires 20 minutes of computational time.

We present an open source 3-D, MATLAB based, resistivity inversion package. The package uses a finite volume discretization to solve the forward partial differential equation. We include a highly efficient approach to reducing boundary effects and source electrode singularities. Solving of the forward problem is achieved by using a preconditioned bi-conjugate stabilized gradient method. For the...
متن کاملInversion of Electrical Resistivity Data: A Review
High density electrical prospecting has been widely used in groundwater investigation, civil engineering and environmental survey. For efficient inversion, the forward modeling routine, sensitivity calculation, and inversion algorithm must be efficient. This paper attempts to provide a brief summary of the past and ongoing developments of the method. It includes reviews of the procedures used f...
متن کاملThree-dimensional joint inversion for magnetotelluric resistivity and static shift distributions in complex media
[1] Accurate interpretation of magnetotelluric (MT) data in the presence of static shift arising from near-surface inhomogeneities is an unresolved problem in threedimensional (3-D) inversion. While it is well known in 1-D and 2-D studies that static shift can lead to erroneous interpretation, how static shift can influence the result of 3-D inversion is not fully understood and is relevant to ...
متن کاملIP4DI: A software for time-lapse 2D/3D DC-resistivity and induced polarization tomography
We propose a 2D/3D forward modelling and inversion package to invert direct current (DC)-resistivity, time-domain induced polarization (TDIP), and frequency-domain induced polarization (FDIP) data. Each cell used for the discretization of the 2D/3D problems is characterized by a DC-resistivity value and a chargeability or complex conductivity for TDIP/FDIP problems, respectively. The governing ...
متن کاملUse of block inversion in the 2-D interpretation of apparent resistivity data and its comparison with smooth inversion
The ability of a block inversion scheme, in which polygons are employed to define layers andror bodies of equal resistivity, in determining the geometry and true resistivity of subsurface structures has been investigated and a simple strategy for deriving the starting model is proposed. A comparison has also been made between block inversion and smooth inversion, the latter being a cell-based s...
